DPD Warning Of Phone Scam

Dalton Police Department Logo

The Dalton Police Department is warning the public of a phone scam that has been reported recently by residents. The scammers have been posing as Dalton Police Department officers and trying to trick would-be victims into giving them money. The Dalton Police Department will never contact you by phone and demand payment over the phone to settle outstanding fines, warrants, or other issues - and no other government agency will, either.

The phone scammers have contacted several Dalton residents in recent days and claimed to be officers from the Dalton Police Department. The scammers claim that the would-be victims have missed a court date or a summons for jury duty and they inform the would-be victim that there is a warrant out for their arrest. The scammers then say that they can accept payment over the phone to settle the issue. This is similar to a number of other scams we have seen in the past, when scammers claim to be from a government agency and demand payment for an outstanding fine and claim that the victim will be arrested if they don't comply. Often, the victim is instructed to go through an elaborate set of instructions to make the payment on a prepaid credit card or debit card. Police officers and other government agencies would never contact you in this manner and would not demand a payment over the phone.

If you suspect that a caller from any police department or government agency could be a scam artist trying to pull a similar trick, you can hang up and call the agency back using their published phone number listed on their website.
