City Offices Closing Friday (1/10/25) For Winter Weather

Thursday, December 9th, 2025

City of Dalton offices will be closed on Friday, January 10th due to expected winter weather. Non-mission critical employees will not be required to report for work that day. Public safety employees and mission critical Public Works employees will still report for work.

The latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, Georgia on Thursday afternoon indicated that snow is likely in Dalton and Whitfield County on Friday morning, beginning as early as 6:00 am. Accumulations of at least 1-2 inches are likely with more accumulation possible. Later in the day on Friday, precipitation is likely to become a wintery mix.

The Public Works Department started work on Thursday afternoon to pre-treat City streets and roads with salt brine solution in anticipation of winter weather. The salt brine solution prevents can keep ice from forming on treated roadways. If ice does form, or in snow events where snow or ice do accumulate on the road, the brine keeps it from bonding with the pavement and sticking. That way, plow trucks can easily clear any accumulated snow or ice. Public Works prepared 8,000 gallons of the salt brine solution in preparation for this storm. The Whitfield County Public Works Department is also working on county roads to prepare them for winter weather, however, residents are urged to avoid driving if at all possible once the winter weather arrives. Residents should avoid all unnecessary trips for their safety.

Public Works will be picking up Friday's garbage and recycling as usual tomorrow (January 10th) but the trucks will be making their rounds earlier than normal to try to beat the winter weather. Residents who have their garbage and recycling picked up on Fridays should make sure to have it to the curb tonight to make sure you don't miss our drivers.
