Public Works Crews Begin Salt Brine Operations For Icy Weather

Thursday, December 22nd, 2022

With temperatures expected to drop into the single digits overnight into Friday morning, the Public Works Department has been hard at work to prepare Dalton's roadways for potential icy conditions. Work began earlier Thursday to pre-treat the main roads with salt brine to help keep roadways clear.

The Public Works Department will also have crews on duty throughout the night to respond to changing road conditions. The department has six salt brine trucks to treat City streets and roadways. They will be out working even after any precipitation stops.

The City of Dalton began using a salt brine treatment instead of spreading gravel and rock salt several years ago. The brine solution can keep ice from forming on treated roadways. If ice does form, or in snow events where snow or ice do accumulate on the road, the brine keeps it from bonding with the pavement and sticking. That way, plow trucks can easily clear any accumulated snow or ice. You can read more about the City's salt brine operation by clicking here.

Even though crews will be working throughout the night to keep the City's streets safe, the City of Dalton strongly recommends staying off of the roads once winter weather begins. Unless it's absolutely necessary to travel, it's a great idea to stay off of the roads.
