Dalton is still Soccertown, USA.
At least one more state championship and as many as three will be coming home to Whitfield County this week and fans unable to attend the games in person can watch together on the big screen in Burr Park.
Dalton Academy and Dalton High School are both playing for state championships in their respective divisions while Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield will be facing off against each other for the state championship in theirs. There will be watch parties on Thursday, May 5th for the Northwest-Southeast clash and Friday, May 6th for the Dalton game. Festivities on both nights will kick off at 7:00 pm with the championship matches set to begin at 7:30 pm. Unfortunately, the park is unavailable Tuesday for the Dalton Academy game due to a previous booking. The watch parties are being organized by the Downtown Dalton Development Authority, Believe Greater Dalton, and the City Parks and Recreation Department.
Concessions will be available for the watch parties and proceeds from the sales will be divided among the four schools participating in the championships.
This week's championship games are just the latest examples of the Dalton areas years of dominance in the sport. In 2021, three area teams (Dalton, Southeast Whitfield, and Coahulla Creek) brought home state championships while other girls and boys teams made deep runs in the state playoffs. Dalton and Southeast both have multiple state championships in their recent history. And with many more great soccer players ready to take the field in Dalton for years to come, the community is positioning itself to stay the best place in the state to play the game with the construction of new FIFA regulation fields.
