Donation Brings Landscaping Improvements To Burr Park

Thursday, May 12th, 2022

The Burr Performing Arts Park has been the center of downtown Dalton since opening in the summer of 2018 and four years later, it keeps getting better. In addition to the recent completion of a new concessions and restroom building on the property, a recent donation from the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia has brought new trees and landscaping features to the park.

The recent $1,000 donation to the park from the Community Foundation’s Friends of Burr Park paid for new shrubs and also new trees to be installed in the park ahead of the busy summer season. The Parks and Recreation Department worked with City Arborist Jerome Key from the Public Works Department to put the grant to work and the new landscaping features have already been installed.

A large crowd is expected at the park on Friday night, May 13th for the Soccertown USA celebration of the area’s state championship soccer teams from Dalton Academy and Southeast Whitfield as well as the boys’ and girls’ teams that made playoff appearances. The popular summer concert series returns to the park on Friday, June 3rd.

The recent donation is the latest in a series of donations from the Community Foundation that have made the park such a successful public-private partnership. Burr Park was built using funds donated to the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia by philanthropist Jeanne Burr and then it was donated to the City of Dalton. Over the years, the Community Foundation has invested nearly $1 million in construction costs for the park, including the $600,000 for the initial creation of the park and $300,000 that was donated to help with the construction of the concert pavilion. The Community Foundation also gave a grant to install a sprinkler system to care of the lawn at the park. The foundation also created an endowment to fund performances at the venue.
