Code Compliance Inspector - Administration Department

The City of Dalton is currently accepting applications for the position of: Code Compliance Inspector.  This is a full-time, hourly position in the City Administration Department with a starting rate of $21.61 to $26.39 per hour (depending on qualifications and prior experience of the applicant). 

The essential duties of this position include:

  • Performs substandard housing inspections and enforces city and state codes; notifies owners and tenants of code violations and identifies necessary improvements.
  • Proactively investigates complaints related to violations of city ordinances.
  • Performs follow-up inspections to ensure improvements are completed in a timely manner.
  • Completes reports and maintains inspection records.
  • Issues citations and testifies in court as required.
  • Coordinates activities with other departments, the City Attorney, and external agencies.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries from owners, builders, contractors, and others.
  • Conducts checks of businesses for proper licenses and occupational tax certificates.
  • Conducts property record searches using GIS, Courthouse records, and title examinations.
  • Removes illegal signs from the right-of-way and addresses code violations associated with non-conforming and prohibited signage.
  • Receives and forwards ordinance complaints to building inspectors or Animal Control as required.
  • Collects, preserves, processes, and submits evidence as may be required.
  • Completes all required reports and forms; deliver confidential documents as may be required.
  • Operates department vehicle with due regard and in a safe manner
  • Assists with enforcement of violations of the Dalton-Whitfield Unified Zoning Ordinance
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications for Position:

  • Knowledge of code compliance principles and practices; computers and job-related software programs; property records research principles; relevant local, state, federal, and internationals laws/code; and city policies and procedures
  • Skills in the use of photographic equipment, file management, problem-solving, prioritizing and planning, interpersonal relations, and oral & written communication
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must possess ICC Code Enforcement Officer certification or be actively pursuing certification during probationary period.
