The City of Dalton Public Works Department is currently accepting applications for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. This is a full-time position in the Fleet Maintenance Division, with a starting pay rate to be determined based on experience. Major duties include: mechanical inspection, maintenance, tune, repair, or overhaul of heavy trucks, earth moving and related construction equipment, motor graders, gasoline and diesel-powered tractors, garbage and recycle trucks, dump trucks, and dozers; a working knowledge of metal fabrication, paint and auto body work. Must be able to read, complete repair work orders, and do general math calculations.  Must be able to operate a variety of vehicles, heavy equipment, machinery, lifts, power tools and other mechanic tools; must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Applicants must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License issued by the State of Georgia. However, a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s license is desired for most positions and must be obtained within six months of employment. The City of Dalton Public Works Department will provide the required Class “B” Commercial Driver’s license training and reimburse the cost of the driver’s test once passed. A minimum of three (3) years mechanic experience is required; Vocational Tech training desirable.
