Fire Department Remembers 9/11 With Memorial Stair Climb

Monday, September 12th, 2022

September 11th, 2001 is a day that will never be forgotten. The heroism of the firefighters from the New York Fire Department along with police officers and first responders from other agencies who ran into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center after they were hit by hijacked planes will be remembered forever.

On the 21st anniversary of the attacks Sunday, firefighters from the Dalton Fire Department paid tribute to the fallen with a 110-floor climb up and down the stairs of the county courthouse parking garage downtown. The climb was symbolic of the 110 floors of the Twin Tower buildings. Immediately after the attacks 21 years ago, the elevators in the building were disabled so firefighters began climbing the stairs on foot to try to reach people trapped by the attack. Firefighters were able to help countless people escape from the building, but 343 FDNY firefighters never made it back out, along with dozens of law enforcement officers from the NYPD and other agencies.

On Sunday, firefighters from the Dalton Fire Department's B-shift made the climb in full turnout gear, along with firefighters from the A and C shifts and also members of the Dalton Police Department. The climb was much different from New York 21 years ago, but the sacrifice of the heroes of 9/11 was on everyone's mind.
