Mayor and Council Declare Constitution Week

Wednesday, August 17th, 2022

As part of the August 15th meeting of the Dalton Mayor and Council, Mayor David Pennington offered a proclamation declaring Constitution Week next month. The proclamation recognizes the week in which September 17th falls to be a week of patriotic celebration of the 235th anniversary of the drafting of the United States Constitution in 1787.

The Independence Day holiday is celebrated in honor of the anniversary of the passage of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. But other notable national anniversaries get less attention including Constitution Day on September 17th . The mayoral proclamation sets aside the week of September 17th through the 23rd for patriotic observation of the historic occasion. Mayor Pennington presented the proclamation to Dell Bailey and Kathryn Sellers of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The proclamation reads:

"WHEREAS, September 17, 2022 marks the 235 th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and

WHEREAS, every anniversary of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to learn about and to reflect upon the rights and privileges of citizenship and its responsibilities; and0

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary, and to the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate it; and

WHEREAS, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 - 23 as Constitution Week.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, I, David Pennington, Mayor of the City of Dalton, Georgia hereby proclaim the week of September 17 – 23, 2022 as “CONSTITUTION WEEK” and urge all citizens to study the Constitution, and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves."
