March 18th Mayor and Council Meeting Notes

The Dalton Mayor and Council met on Monday, March 18th for their second regularly scheduled meeting of the month. During the meeting, Mayor Sams announced that the council's first meeting of April, which had been scheduled for April 1st, has been canceled. Before the meeting, the Mayor and Council met in executive session as the Finance and Administration Committee to discuss real estate and possible litigation, and then held an open meeting as the Finance and Administration Committee to hear an update on the City's finances from Finance Director Cindy Jackson.

During Monday's meeting, the Mayor and Council voted to:
- Approve Budget Amendment #7 for FY 2023 Budget - The final budget amendment for the FY 2023 budget was made. You can watch this portion of the meeting by clicking here.
- Approve Budget Amendment #1 for FY 2024 Budget - The first budget amendment for the FY 2024 budget was made. You can watch this portion of the meeting by clicking here. Both budget amendments were discussed during the Finance Committee meeting.
- Accept Property From Temple Beth El congregants - The City accepted the donation of the property of the Temple Beth El synagogue from the former congregants. The structure will be torn down, with portions of the structure remaining as part of a new memorial park that will be part of a stormwater infrastructure improvement.
Before the meeting's main agenda, the Mayor and Council heard public comments from residents. Mr. Fred Johnson spoke to the council about his hope that the City would take some action to honor and memorialize Henry "Hank" Anderson who came to Dalton in the 1950's to work for the Parks and Recreation Department and was a key figure in building much of the department's infrastructure and served as an inspirational and important figure in the lives of many of Dalton's young people at the time. The Mayor and Council also heard a presentation from Tourism Director Margaret Thigpen on the increases in hotel/motel tax collections and also to view a new video that will be used to market Dalton to visitors. You can watch this portion of the meeting and the new video by clicking here.
