City Will Recognize Constitution Week In September

The United States Constitution is the founding document of our nation's government and is the model for democratic republics around the world. The 236th anniversary of the drafting of our Constitution is coming up in September, and the occasion will be celebrated in Dalton as Constitution Week.

Mayor David Pennington issued a proclamation at Monday night's meeting of the Mayor and Council to declare the week of September 17th through the 23rd as Constitution Week. Mayor Pennington presented the proclamation to Kathryn Sellers and Dell Bailey from the Daughters of the American Revolution. 

The mayor's proclamation reads: 

WHEREAS, September 17, 2023 marks the 236 th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and

WHEREAS, every anniversary of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to learn about and to reflect upon the rights and privileges of citizenship and its responsibilities; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary, and to the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate it; and

WHEREAS, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 - 23 as Constitution Week.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, I, David Pennington, Mayor of the City of Dalton, Georgia hereby proclaim the week of September 17 – 23, 2023 as “CONSTITUTION WEEK” and urge all citizens to study the Constitution, and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves.
