City Departments Take Part In Chamber Expo
It was a beautiful afternoon outside for the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce's annual Chamber Business Expo. The event was held outside in the parking lot of First Baptist Church where a large and enthusiastic crowd toured the different tents, learning about different businesses around the area. They also had a chance to meet and greet some of the City of Dalton's finest. The Dalton Police Department and Dalton Fire Department were both represented at the event, as was the Downtown Dalton Development Authority.
The Chamber Expo is always a great opportunity for businesses to network with each other and also to connect with new customers. This year, the event doubled as a job fair, and employers were able to get the word out about possible employment opportunities. Both the police department and fire department had recruiters on hand to speak to people interested in a future in public safety.
The main focus, though, was on connecting with the people we serve. While our public safety agencies don't have "customers" like the other businesses represented at the expo, they are in the service delivery industry. One way our agencies serve the public is to make sure they're informed about the best ways to keep themselves and their families safe, and today's event was a good chance to get important safety information into the hands of residents. With the kickoff for National Fire Safety Month coming in up a few days, the Dalton Fire Department was pushing important messages including the importance of sleeping with your bedroom doors closed. Simply closing a door can significantly slow the spread of fire through a structure and give you more time to get out of the house or to be rescued.
The Business Expo was also an opportunity to simply meet some of the people that our police officers and firefighters serve and to let residents make connections with members of the agencies. Too often, the only time residents interact with public safety employees is during times of stress and emergency. The chance to connect in a more casual and friendly setting is a welcome opportunity, and we thank the Chamber for including us!
